Have computers helped or hurt our lives?

Generally speaking, every invention has advantages and disadvantages. And whether users get good out of it depends on users themselves. This is also true for computers too. Computers are now prevalent around the world. Almost everyone has a chance to use computers. I think computers have brought about so much advantages than disadvantages that hurt our lives that it has helped us in total. There are 3 reasons that will lead you to this conclusion.

First, the use of the Internet has changed everything including society, economies, and communication dramatically. Take communication for example, we are now connected each other via email and social media that enables us to be constantly connected. If you want to tell something, you just have tell the computer to do so. The use of the Internet has trumped geography. This is definitely the example of computers helping us.

Secondly, computers help us to do calculation. Computers are good at doing simple and repetitive computation and memorizing exact numbers which are both human being are not good at. Take space development for example, the calculation of space shuttle launching, the speed of orbit, and other physics by computers have helped us explore the mystery of space. Without computers, with only human brain, we couldn't have done this exciting things.

Finally, computers shows virtually created new world. Computers are also good at simulating, such as the movement of consumers, the change of environment, and the scenery of old world. Take films for example, a lot of films now depend on computer graphics that enables to happen something virtually without actually make that happen. And 3D effect is now becoming prevalent. This whole experiments that we wouldn't have experienced without computers have definitely brought us a excitement and curiosity.

In conclusion, of course there are some side-effects that hurt our lives using computers, however, there are a lot more benefits using them. Because we are now connected over geographical distance, we can calculate faster and solve difficult problems, and we now can see the virtual new world.

wasting time

Since more than a year ago, I record my every learning history. Even this English writing practice. I assign 20minutes for this actually. Also, I record the history of Computer Science learning, reading a book, learning English, etc. The aim I do this now is a little bit obscure now surprisingly while it was obvious at the beginning. Now, I'll consider about this habit and maybe find drawbacks or good points, and fix it.

First, the aim of this. I think I started this because I wanted to make the abstract learning effort visible. When I started this, I was really into learning English. For example, I did more than 6 hours a day. However, English is something you use, and I didn't have a lot of chance using it, I was uneasy about the meaning of what I did. And by visualizing it, in the form of time, I felt better because I could feel like I did whole this!!, this is gonna bring me something good. This is one of its good points. However, there is a bad point of course. Now the learning history is visible that I know how much I did at the end of the day. This means I can compare it with that of other days. Since I am a little bit a perfectionist that I felt I lost on the day when the total amount of time is much shorter than other day while it doesn't matter. However, from a different perspective, this would boost my willingness to do more. But instinctively, I recently think this is stressful. Stressful because I am ruled by something that is not essential.

The essential point of learning is quality rather than quantity. I know it is not completely proportional to the amount of time I spent. Of course, more I study, more I get better. But I think it is time to pursuit quality learning experience since there are so much amount of things I want to learn. I it simply impossible to learn them all doing in a way I do. I need to be clever.

In conclusion, as of now, I don't stop this. Because it is not that complicated and painful habit. And I see more benefit than disadvantage. I think I am still at the stage that I needs constant effort of learning that require certain amount of time spent for learning on a daily basis. And this habit is helpful for this. But in the near future when the time is ripe, I will be at the stage I use what I've got so far that requires so much creativity and passion, and more quality pursuit in learning, I am gonna stop this habit. Because what I need at that stage is the quality of what I did rather than how much I devoted myself.

Why do you think it is that people's lives are longer now?

I live in a country where the people have the longest longevity, Japan. I see a lot of old people walking in the town, and see less kids these days. Comparing with the people in the past, the average longevity has definitely increased without a doubt. There are a few reasons that explain this. And this will also show why Japanese people have the longest longevity.

First, we have a rich system of welfare. We all have to enroll in national health insurance that covers the 70% of medical cost you pay. This insurance can apply for any deceases, sickness except for some special cases such as dental makeover. Therefore, it is a rare case in Japan that people lose their lives due to curable sickness because they just have to go to hospital and get better. People generally don't have problem with money accepting medical attention. And not only for Japan, not expensive medical cost is becoming prevalent in the world.

Second, the technology has evolved. There used to be a lot of deceases or ailments that couldn't be cured in the past. These days, as technology progress, the more possibility those deceases can be cured. Therefore, people get cured even if they get serious ones. And not only curing, the precaution that will prevent people from getting serious deceases or even small sickness is well taken so that people get less sickness that made people's lives longer consequently.

Finally, people now get richer food. In this society, food production is massively done by doing separately across the world. In turn, the production of food got efficient and abundant. Therefore, people now eat enough food without so much pain getting food like people did in the past. This richness made people more healthy and gave leisure that in turn brought longevity.

In conclusion, people all over the world got longer longevity because human beings got a better system and technology to fight against deceases and sickness and get enough food for health.

Distributed Education: the new form of Education

The other day, Computer Science department of Stanford University announced that 3 lectures are going to be provided this fall for not only students at there, but also people in the world. Those lectures contain lecture video, quiz, assignments, and discussion as well. Stanford has been doing this kind of distributed education, but this time, Stanford will offer real time lectures meaning people around the world literally participate in the classes simultaneously.

I've been using the series of lectures, of course with assignments and quiz as well. However, I felt somewhat alone. I was studying alone. I think the existence of certain number of people will boost your motivation or passion toward learning because of social effect and competition. You'll be motivated if you see people in your class do better than you or harder than you right? And this experimental distributed education is actually really different from the old ones.

I plan to enroll 2 lectures out of 3. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. This is like the new form of education. In the long time ago, there were no enough school that kids had to go a long way. In the past, education was physically distant. But now, it its distance is zero. You can access to the world's best education just by turning on your computer. The only distance you have to come over is your mind. Mind that you want to get that education.

The CS department at Stanford is definitely lead the new form of education with technology of Internet. I felt like they did kind of role they had, that is what the No1 education institute has got to do. And this kind of distributed education will be prevalent not only CS, but also for any fields. This is the right use of the Internet. I can't wait to see the world with dynamically connected each other where there are a lot of shortcuts.

75000 people have enrolled to Artificial Intelligence class as of this writing. This will grow further. And Stanford also offers the community service using facebook that connects all students. This is just a beginning. What is another options or way of providing distributed education??

Do you like serious movies or funny movies more?

I really enjoy watching movies as hobby. And sometimes I find really nice movies out of a number of them. And I noticed that they are all serious movie rather than funny movie. I think there are 2 reasons that I like serious ones than funny ones.

First, we can mirror our emotion to the hero/heroine in the serious movie. We get very involved, and feel as if we were in the movie then we virtually experience what happens in the film. Therefore, the message of the film will be delivered to us more easily so that those emotion from virtual experiences would persist for long time. As a result, the serious ones are more memorable.

Secondly, considering the nature of serious ones and funny ones, the former ones are more interesting. Funny film tends to be providing temporary laughter constantly. And we may laugh at that time, and enjoy watching. However, those emotions tend to stem from really weak and less informational background because temporary laughter consists of sudden or unexpected phenomenons. On the other hand, serious films provide something through giving viewers abundant information of background and reasoning. Therefore, the story or message persists in our mind.

In conclusion, the best films tend to be serious ones because they are more memorable for us because we can emotionally involved in the film, and the nature of serious films that they provide rich information of the story.

Determined to One

Yesterday was recently the worst day I ever had in terms of how aimless I was. I was not willing to anything that is related to my major. I know I am not enough, I've got to catch up to those top-notch people in the world. I have interest in it.

I did learning about OpenCV as always in the morning, and when I was considering what I do next, I had 3 choices, OpenCV, iOS development, and Python. Since I had no strongly determined goal for each, I got lost. And I enjoyed another part of my life, indulging in things that have made by somebody. I watched 2 films, and played computer video game for the first time in about more than a year. That was great experience while I am into those things, but when I had done with all of them and went to bed, I was feeling terrible, reflecting my whole day and I noticed that I had too many choices with lack of passion. I know the source of every challenge and action are passion. I did less passion. And I thought, what am I now passionate about? And in the bed, I came up.

I am passionate about Computer Vision. Remember the day when you first did that, how it fascinated me. I can do that one by one. Don't let anybody bother your instinct and will. Don't live somebody's life. I felt like this. And I suddenly came up with one order from my instinct. "ひとまず1冊やってみれば", try complete a whole book for a now?. I felt my goals for now determined to one that makes my action more accurate and quick and determined.

This is the implication. When people have too many choices without any priority and clear goal, people hesitate to pick one. And I recalled one scene of my favorite manga "Slum Dunk". That was the scene when Kaede Rukawa beats the best player in Japan Sawakita, coach Anzai explains that when offense has multiple choices, deffence can't pick one that the offense can pass through. This is the good use of having multiple choices. But this time, these available choices are what you can do while my multiple choices what I can't do now.

It is best to have multiple weapons for anything. But, when you are not, and willing to get multiple weapons, you have to have passion for getting each weapon, and sometimes you have to pick one to move on. Still, the most important thing is passion. With that, you are always determined and you know what to do next.

Climbing a mountain

The other day, I climbed a mountain with my friend. Since I didn't have enough money but wanted to go somewhere, mountain was a best choice. However, without a car, it is inaccessible to mountain from center of Tokyo, so that there was a little journey just before reaching the start point of mountain.
And when I got to the station, I felt I was in rural city, it is interesting that we naturally feel the difference. The structure of station, fruits seller, mysterious and old ads, etc. All these made me feel I was distant from urban city.
Furthermore, I took a bus to the mountain. And we started. There were a lots of stores before actually enter the mountain. This is a sightseeing spot that people there sell something normal as special.

We entered a mountain(I should have written 'we' instead of 'I' lol) and felt really nice. The old shrine first was in sight, and this made us feel sophisticated. As we climb, we noticed that it was pretty hard. Our legs started to ache, and sweat streamed down. But the beautiful scenery cheered us.
One best custom of climbing mountain is "saying hi to everyone". We first didn't say that just like we walk in the city, but a lot of people said hi to us that we did the same. It feels great to say hi to people because it feels like we are doing the same thing.

As we climb and climb, taking rest sometimes, feeling really tired, we got to the top of the mountain. My friend was really tired that he looked desperate. We ran out of drinks that we expected we could buy something on the top, but the reality was really expensive drink. a little can of coke = 250 yen, more than double!!but.. we didn't have another choice that we bought of course. it was the best coke I ever had.

Climbing a mountain something similar to everything. People say it is similar to life. We have a lot of choice, and take a variety of route, but we share the exactly same goal which is death. Indeed, this is true. But the most important implication is that it is best to have difficulty first and then have joy later, in Chinese that is said "先苦後楽". My mom always tells me this. I felt this.

Of course, climbing mountain is a set of climbing up and down. It is actually real pain for me. I think if the experience of climbing is one way up, down is skipped, climbing mountain is far more popular.

In Japan, school teachers say "It is still a journey until you get to home" when school trip. It sure is! On the way down, it was far more dangerous of getting injured. The fatigued body and not tensioned mind makes it happen more likely. And at the time we get to the station of cable car, we enjoyed another joy of being able to survive the mountain.

Dream Analysis

We dream every time we sleep. You don't? No, you just forget what you saw. People dream in the period of REM sleep. I took a class about Dream Analysis when I was the freshman at university. That was interesting actually that I still like to dream and analyze. The famous psychologist Jung started the theory that dream is what your unconscious tells you. And our unconscious have no means to tell you using language that our unconscious uses our image that is close to what it wants to say, and this is a dream. We dream, but we don't know what exactly unconscious tell because the whole picture is so random that we don't understand the story. However, when you somehow analyze your dream, and interpret it, you'll notice something related to your real life, and definitely know our unconscious tells something through dream.

Here is how I do analyze. First we have to dream, technically we have to remember our dream. If we don't care about dream, it will easily gone. Therefore, I recommend first that you get interested in dream. This is the first step, you show your attitude that "I'm listening" to our unconscious. And then, when you dream, I recommend taking a note of your dream. By making that ambiguous dream written, it will be concrete that you are dreaming. You should do this every time you dream. And this will increase the possibility you remember the dream.

Now, next step, you have dreamed and written it, now it is time to analyze it. My method is as follows.
- mark any symbol or outstanding points while writing ( I use @@ as signal)
- analyze that points using dream dictionary and your brain
that specific word implies something, (e.g. go exploring => hope)
- maybe you'll see your dream is consists of many parts that each represents something to you
or different parts together implies big story to you.
you should see the entire picture rather than seeing particular detailed points
- contrast it with your real life ( this will happen naturally)

And today's dream told me that....
In dream, I went to go treasure hunting with my friends, and I was in jungle and eventually fell down from falls.
This implies that I have hope(treasure hunting) and exploring jungle(success), and fell from falls (missing opportunities) but eventually I enjoyed falling falls like amusement attraction(be on the way of success)

In reality, I got know about Python, new language for me, and I was in quandary whether I do iOS development or OpenCV and python. And I knew my instinct tells me to do OpenCV and Python.

For me, the dream matches to this problem in reality.

It is interesting.
PS. I often have dream that ends with the scene I kissing, does this have some implication that I'll get girlfriend?? lol

They say, there is nothing useless...

Steve Jobs resigned as a CEO of apple. This is a big news for me. I bought ipod, ipod touch, iPad, Macbook Air. Now, my life is not easy without those apple products. They now seep into my life. And not only those products, Steve Job's speech at the graduation ceremony at Stanford is also seep into myself. His speech was impressive. Especially the story about "connecting dots". That story reminded me who struggles which way to go and wonder where I am going. The story game courage that what I do now will connect to somewhere.
Yesterday, I read an article of a guy who works at Silicon Valley. He is 2 years older, and the fact that we are in the same generation gives me courage. His article was about Steve Job's "connecting dots" either. And as I read it, I noticed that Steve Jobs was saying the truce but didn't tell the really important part. He didn't do something randomly or recklessly. He did have a best choice he may have had, the choice that came from his instinct of experience and passion and sangfroid. And even after doing the best action, you'll never know where that dot connect to. This is the real interpretation of his story.
Now, reflecting back the acts I have made, I was a little different from this finding. I was placing dots which may connect to some dots with expectation, not real consideration or guesses. For example, I was practicing for TOEIC so much, that I thought the Toeic score will connect to somewhere fantastic, which is not. The most important thing is to choose the best choice for me, the best choice was to get the real English in academic context, that I realized when I was sophomore. However, even that Toeic practice is not useless. But the loss of that time could have created another dots which will connect to more fantastic dots, these regrets are the problem, and we have to learn from these, take best things out of them.

Steve Jobs, good job! You have given us the message that still requires some consideration after you resign. Thank you.

Is homework important for students?

Schools give assignments to students. This is one of important role. A lot of students don't like that, and even some people suspect its meaning. I think homework is essentially important element for students. There are 2 reasons that will lead you to this conclusion.

First, time is limited. Learning is based on a lot of effort that requires a lot of time. And that is not enough just study at school. Also, the levels of each student differ that the school as a whole has to adopt to the average student, this makes some top-notch students boring. However, this is inevitable because school has to offer a unified education in a sense. Therefore, homework will complement this downsides of school education.

Second, I think the most important role of school is to make students get used to learning constantly and alone. Since learning at school is just a part of entire life that each person has to do something on their own. And if he/she has a custom of learning by themselves, it will be so much easier to explore the new world, this will bring a progress to students. Therefore, giving a homework to students will grow this habit.

In conclusion, giving homework to students will make them more independent in learning, and complement the drawback of school education. For these reasons, I think it is important to give homework for students.

What My mom probably thinking

My mother, recently a little too nervous. I wake up and say "good morning", but she replies something like "Do this", "Don't do this", such as "clean your room" instead of saying "good morning". So is my sister experiencing this. If this does not end, quarrel never ends. I can stand with that, but my sister can't; that they just keep fighting.

But, I don't know what she is thinking about. Why bother say something offensive in the morning. She wasn't that nervous before. There must be some changes she had. What is she thinking? I'll consider this as if I were in her shoes.

I am mother. I have a son and a daughter, both of them are university student, they both go to private school which means the tuition is high. And they eat a lot. And my son doesn't speak a lot, while my daughter speaks too much. My son does something weird everyday, does he have a friend? Computer is a friend? he doesn't even work. he used to work. But, he studies a lot, and his grades are good. But he failed to get scholarship which I expected a lot. My daughter, doesn't study a lot, she is lazy.
Wow,, I have to work everyday for a living. not for me, for my kids who are not perfect to me. What is about my life? Is my life for my kids? I am feeding them, that I am not equal to them. I am greater than them. They must obey what I say. but they don't!!

Maybe this is something my mom is thinking about and why she is so nervous. She is nervous because she wants us to be perfect, and our incompleteness stands out to her, and that gets her nerves. And she doesn't have enough free time that her mind is full of stress.

I noticed interesting implication of what I did so far. Reflecting myself by pretending to be someone else. As I wrote about myself as mom, I felt something different. I felt I am looking myself from the sky. Maybe this is useful method to recognize the status of me properly. Especially, this is useful to get a picture of me from other's perspective. Because, in the previously used method, we recognize ourself from our perspective which of course we know ourselves well. This will sketch the picture what others see us. Of course, the picture differs depending on who sees that, but more exercises will reveal the general picture of me.

However, this is experimental method. I'll try this later.

Seeping into the world full of English

I'm now going through a series of online lectures provided by Stanford University, and I am doing it in a quick pace now. Yesterday, I watched 4 lectures because the contents were already a little familiar to me. And I noticed one thing we leap when we dive into the world of English for a long time.

I usually watch one or two lectures at most. In that case, I feel a little far from being able to listen to English instinctively, but yesterday, I could understand it like an having image in my brain, just like listening to my mother language Japanese. And I got a hint of attitude about how to listen. The point is, you shouldn't follow the sound to interpret the meaning of each word. It is actually hard to explain, but I felt something different yesterday. I felt "I am getting better!!". After more than 8 years of learning English, I felt a little impatience that I don't speak and listen well. But there was a progress yesterday, I am now more motivated.

Learning something requires constant effort. Since nothing comes easily, we need to practice and practice on a daily basis. However, our motivation gradually get weaker, when we are challenged or having failure. But we should keep doing that, because we know something happens that shows progress or brings success that motivate us if we do it a lot. And once you get over any obstacles, your passion becomes stronger than before. Leonald Da Vinchi said something like this. "Whatever challenges I have, they will only strengthen my passion." I like this. I want to have this in mind every time.

Do you agree or disagree? "The most important thing about a job is how much money you earn in that job.

Earning a certain amount of money is crucial for living. Without money, you can't even do something new or interests you. This means you lose some important parts of your life. Therefore you should choose a job with a certain amount of money that will guarantee you explore uncertainty. However, you shouldn't choose your job based on only how much money you can earn. There are 2 reasons that will lead you to this conclusion.

Firstly, just having a lot of money won't make you happy. Money is not the unified currency of happiness. I think money is just a tool to get something amazing. If you yourself have nothing special, you don't know how to use that tool. If your life is full of purposes and meanings, your tool or money will be useful. Therefore, you should choose your job that interests you because you spend a lot of time in working in your whole life.

Secondly, your job certainly makes you happy. If you have a job that is you are really passionate about, and you love the job, you will be happy in time. A lot of successful people really like their field that even work paying money for it. You should follow what your instinct says. You certainly have something really interest you. If you don't, you will lose an important element of your life which is something like achievement, success, or friendship.

In conclusion, job is an important part of your life that you have to choose carefully. Since job selection affect your life in terms of happiness, you should choose your job that you can be able to be passionate. And the motivation to choose shouldn't be only money oriented because only having money means you only have tool that won't make you happy.

Basketball

I played basketball with my one of closest friend for the first time in almost 6 years. I was in a basketball club when I was in middle school, and I shifted my main sport to Judo. Since then, I was away from basketball. But, I have always liked it, its rule, dynamic play, big and cool players. Japanese basketball comic "Slum Dunk" triggered me to like it. Not only me, people liked the manga. I still sometimes become wanting to read it again.

Yesterday, we played at the basketball court in the park which is really small, the size of doing free throw. And we played for a while, a boy came and joined us. And my friend asked him to play 1-on-1. I was surprised that he talked to stranger. I thought he was a little too shy of strangers. This is a little finding. well... he lost.

After playing it, I felt a nice and comfortable tiredness, and I felt I still like that.

dispersion to convergence

There are many many things in this world that forms dispersion to convergence. The way you learn, the political argument, human thinking, this kind of process occurs in every domain. For example, when having argument, first you will come up and share some ideas, and this is dispersion, and by arguing, the ideas become more sophisticated and some of them are declined that the argument becomes convergence.
However, there is also the opposite direction of process of this. Convergence to dispersion. For example, learning English, the most efficient way I believe take this form, when learning how to listen and read, we first take cautious way of learning, meaning we spend more time on one or a few materials, and keep this practice. And as the learner gets better, he decreases the amount of materials that are for detailed learning, and instead of that, increasing the amount of materials for more rough usage of materials. This is calles "taking English shower"
It is interesting that phenomenons take a different process interms of dispersion and convergence. Each phenomenon can take the other one of course, but that will make it much less efficient. This finding implicates we need to be careful about this. But, we naturally take the best form. Amazing.

Mother and sister quarrel

It occurs often that my mom and my younger sister quarrel. In this morning, my sister first showed her newly bought clothes to her mom expecting her to say something good. And she asked her "how much is this do you think?" and mom replied "500 yen" which is really cheap, and she was joking I think. And my sister argued back. This triggered their war. My sister didn't like mom's reaction, and my mom didn't like her attitude.
And this war went another direction, they started talking about problems other than clothes. Something like how she behave everyday, money, the fact that mom feeds and give a living to her. It is interesting that they didn't even argue about what was the initial problem.
The first stimulus triggers both of them to express and tell what they had in mind secretly. There is a wall between we think and wanting to express and actually expressing it. And the first stimulus eliminated that wall. In that case, it is like a dam of water, and it won't be easy to stop until they finally finish flowing all of their water(or emotion)
However this is interesting to me, I need to take precaution not to split the relationship of them, and I want them to get along. Now, I think they need the objective viewpoint. And I decided to record their quarrel every time, and let them listen. That will make them realize how their logic collapse, and how ugly they are. With emotion flowing really fast, they are blind, they lose their objective viewpoint.

What am I? I am the observer. Peacemaker.

Is it important for students to evaluate their teachers?

The quality of teachers matter how good or bad students will be. Students have almost nothing at first, and teachers give to them. And not only that, teachers can also give curiosity that will make them explore after they leave school. I think it is important for students to evaluate their teachers for 3 reasons.

First, teachers are human who make mistakes. Even passionate teachers will have problem in teaching because of the diversity of student's activity that will bring about uncertainty. Even experienced teachers will have problem that has never happened. By giving a feedback, teachers would notice the problems students had, but not noticed. And this finding will make the teaching strategy more efficient and better for the future students.

Secondly, good part of teaching would be strengthen. If feedback contains good evaluation, teachers would strengthen what was good in the lecture. This will make the lecture more sophisticated. Furthermore, teachers will be more motivated in teaching by reading good reputation. And he/she will feel enjoyment in teaching, this would create better teachers.

Finally, students themselves may be able to improve. By evaluating teachers and whole lecture in the end, students will reflect what was going on in the whole lecture, and this will have good effect on student's future in a way that students will have more concrete idea of which way to go next.

In conclusion, evaluating teachers will strengthen the good and solve the bad points, and evaluators themselves can reflect the past for the future. Therefore, it is important for students to evaluate their teachers.

Own Domain

I went to Tsukiji fish market this morning to buy not fish, but vegetables and fruits. I was really overwhelmed by people there. The way people talk, move, behave was a little rude compared to normal stores in Tokyo. But their energy was something similar to that of Taiwan. The feeling of people "living" was there. And I noticed 2 things being there.
First, I am living on someone else's work. I do nothing about living, doing everything that's possible when living is secured such as using computer, learning English, and etc. And that's why I felt uneasy being there because I felt I am powerless there, seeing my mother and father buying foods for our living and people selling for living. And this also made me realize one more finding.
There is a individually different domain for each person. Everyone has different field that one can release a lot of energy while not in other field. For people there, business or selling vegetables is there domain. For me, doing computer is maybe my domain. Even though I feel amplified energy while doing that, am I as energetic and passionate as people at Tsukiji? Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I now know that I have to be more passionate about this. I know a lot of successful people really like their field by having a strong passion. And with that, they face obstacles but they strengthen their passion.

By Next time I go there, can I be able to be a person who don't feel uneasy being there? Am I a person who are strong for living?
I was a little far away from the fact we have to live by myself. My parents now feed me, but they will be gone sometime. I knew this, but I was keeping away from that. Let me be strong. I've got to be.

Mixing together

I watched a TV program about people in Africa, country of Malawi, reporting what Japan is. They came to Japan, and report whatever fascinates them. They went to Tsukizi to see Japanese eat raw fish, and unagi, and kimono, pet shop, etc.
And I felt really interesting to see people who even don't know a fragment of Japan get to know about Japan. This is not the rare case to me, I've been always greedy to let non-Japanese to know about Japan. It feels good to tell. I think we are made to communicate regardless of our race, color of skin. There are now no boarder of information, there is just a physical boarder. As internes get prevalent, the physical boarder becomes distinct. Considering this world became much safer, even though there are still a lot of conflicts, that physical boarder is now becoming lower and lower.
I don't care which country I belong to, I love Japan, but if I have to live in other countries in order to achieve something meaningful and important to me, I don't care. Because we are now all connected physically and informationally. The physical position does not really matter. This is gradual unification of physical and informational distance between people.
Next, the language is becoming unified. It happens to be English that became lingua franca. Using English, it is beneficial for all. I learn and use English not because I love to learn, but because I can reach something that is important to me using English. In one part, I love English language itself because I like its rhythm, but essentially I don't want to bother to learn it if it was not lingua franca. It just happens to be. I think this stream will not stop. More and more non-English speakers use the language, and now the number of non-native English speaker outnumbers that of native speakers. I hope this is the beginning of language unification. With only one language, it will be so much efficient to communicate. I don't feel sadness about the disapeeraring languages because I know the beauty of internal human intellectual activity. There are so much things that could not have been communicated because of language. That loss is the loss of the world. Maybe 2 more next generations, we'll be talking one language. Isn't it great.

My cousins

Yesterday, my 2 cousins returned to Taiwan after staying for 6days. I hope they had enjoyed Japan. I am a little worried about him. I noticed that he is a little too much patriot. There is a story that makes me concerned about this. When we went to appliance store and bought a camera, we asked them to deduct tax by showing passport. And in the process of that, the clerk wrote he was a Chinese while he believes he is a Taiwanese. It is not clerk's fault, she just did her job, but he got really angry that he even said "I am not Chinese" in Japanese. He was prepared to say this. Considering his level of speaking Japanese, he intentionally learned how to say that. I know Taiwan is not independent country while it has certain qualification to be seen as independent, and I think Taiwans should be independent, but it is not good idea to blame the end node of this problem, he shouldn't have blamed to the clerk. It is not fair. The problem stems from elements of deep inside, emotional action won't solve this problem. Same kind of thing happens when war is happening, is it inevitable to kill civilians because it is war? What about their justice, life. It is not always fair to attack the end of tree, and the structure that the people who made the problem always hiding is really disgusting.

What if you need to use/eliminate someone in order to achieve your goal, would you do that? By preparing for this kind of potential choices, it will be easier to live this life. It depends.

The beauty of fireworks

Fireworks is one of Japanese traditional thing that explains one part of Japan. People get together to see it and share its brief beauty. A lot of people go there every summer, a lot of couples, families, children. People enjoy it very much.
Its beauty comes from a variety of fireworks, colors, shapes, sizes, and sound. Sound comes after it first explode in the air. And that makes it more exciting after actually see it. You see it, enjoy its brief pop in the air, and close your eyes, and enjoy its sounds. You definitely feel so good.
Yesterday, I went to one of the biggest and most famous fireworks event. Since there was a influence of the earth quake, a lot of other fireworks were canceled, a lot of people were there. There are even police to control the traffic. Every year, there are some incidents that some people were killed due to crowded environment. And that's why police control crowd recently. Fireworks is this much popular in Japan.

Writing something from nothing

I try to update this blog everyday, but every time I start writing, I have problem in setting what to write. Topic setting is the most difficult part. Once I set an appropriate topic that means I know about that well, I basically can write smoothly with a certain quality. Now it came to me that this is somewhat related to my way of having conversation. I talk less, not because I don't want to, but just I am not good at it.
Writing and Speaking is basically same, just the way of telling is different. The key point is that whether you have good content or not. If you have enough content, what you have to is to speak out about that. However, there are differences actually. Timing and interactivity. In writing something, technically there is a plenty of time, and chance to revise it. On the contrary, conversation is not like that. You've got to speak at an appropriate timing, and quite often wait to listen to others. And writing is single-oriented activity, that is you don't get response immediately that you don't have to adapt to that such as estimating what response or question or argues my occur when writing. On the other hand, when having conversation, you have to adapt to context of conversation in real time. That requires high level function of brain, higher than that of writing.
I want to learn to speak well, talk well, and write well. I think those each ability is closely related. You get better in speaking, you also get better in writing as well. But, I think there is not much correlation between talking and writing. Because of its nature that is one-way communication.
What I want to get better most is talking. I am poor at communicating with people. Not only what/how much content I have to have, there are other factors I have to consider. How to tell those contents, how to react with responses, how to behave. These are still problematic to me. Well, to be honest, I have these problems only when talking with girls. This suggest that I have to take steps to get used to girls and take some measure to deal with that. I have to consider about this.
I don't know why simply. This gradually started when I was in middle school, I didn't talk with girls. And in high school, what's worse, I thought talking with girls is something not what I bothered to do, or not what I proud of. I was a really damn stupid. Now, I am willing to do that, but now girls around me, meaning I even don't know whether I am good talker or not.

In conclusion, I keep writing in order to present something well in speech and writing that is one-way oriented communication. This is going smoothly I think. I also have to do the same thing in Japanese. I have done too much only in English.
And for 2-way communication, talking, I've got to make more friends, or take more chances to talk with new people that means I have to be more willing to ask people out. I'll consider about this later.

TOEFL Practice

Do you agree or disagree? "You shouldn't judge people by how they look."

People get most information through eyes. It is same in terms of communication. You never can know everything about other people because our mind is separated. However, we can know it more and more as time goes, and that will grow better relationship with other people. Of course, all the people should judge people by how their inner character, but I think it's inevitable to judge people by how they look. There are 3 reasons that will lead to this conclusion.

Firstly, we communicate with most of people in a brief way. We meet new people having only one body and limited time that we can't manage to spend enough time to communicate. Therefore, we have to rely on information from eyes, that may be superficial but mostly correct based on the experience we've built since we born. And this is why handsome/beautiful smiling people get along well. This is how animal live and how natural selection works.

Secondly, memory remains. Memory in our brain is categorized so that we can remember how that people is like, and in the process of getting information of that people, with time is limited, our information of that people is quite a few. Therefore, memory of our brain storage for that person is full of information of first meeting. For example, she was always smiling that she should be kind and cheerful even if she was really evil woman. However, we can't help relying on that.

Lastly, we all are animals. Animals have instinct in unconscious that tells us what the target is. For example, whether I should cooperate or not. It is not logical to feel in that way because of our brain, but under the scenes that we don't know, our brain has something it has long collected over the generations. Therefore, we as animal, act in that way.

In conclusion, because we have limited resource physically interms of time communicating with others, and this make our brain have a few information about others that make occupy the specific part of brain that is used when communicating with specific person, and we instinctively get some information about others, we inevitably judge people by how they look.

Anger flows

In this morning, I had a dream, and that was a little long since I had last, and I felt happy being able to feel something different. I woke in a different mind this morning. And I suddenly realized that was because I did "experiencing the experience meditation" last night, and that's why emotion has flown inside me. And I jumped out my bed and said Morning to mom. But she replied in a really tired attitude. Without replying morning, she said take garbage out. And I felt anger, knowing how she think about us, our life. But at that time, that was out of me. Anger grows eventually, as she quarrel with my sister. And I started my everyday work in the morning, but feeling uneasy though. I couldn't keep doing them. Anger grows. I felt really bad, that my attitude toward mom was terrible. I recalled how bad I was, and shamed on me.

Since my mind wanders, I did nothing, just relaxed for an hour, reading manga. And I noticed that my mind eventually cleared up. Anger became small. And for finishing up, I took a shower, and used mint to fresh me up, I feel now different. I feel so confidence, so optimistic, and willing to do my work.

Now, I've got one way to recover me from the state my mind full of anger and anxiety. Do nothing, and do whatever you feel relaxed, and take a shower. Sometimes we need this kind of refresh.

Have a nice day!!

The amazing insight into procrastination

I read one article yesterday, that was about why we procrastinate and how to avoid that. Indeed, I do that. Learning for exam, and sometimes computer science, reading books, doing chores, etc. Main factors that make them happen are commonly considered such as fear of failure, perfectionism. But the article pointed out that there may be a one more factor, human evolution.

We are human species, and if we go back long time, there are another kind of human. So, how we survived? Archaeologists have long examined about that, and found out out brain is the key, the size of if. Especially, one part of our brain is bigger than other's, made it happen. That part organize how we think. We can have multiple plans, and pick the seemingly best one out of them. That is the reason. And that is how our brain developed.

Now let's go back to our story. The brain development theory implicates that our brain can judge whether the plan is valid or not. Therefore, the 3rd reason of procrastination is that our brain warns us not to do it, or it is not worth doing. Procrastination is considered stems from our character, but it may be not.

And this is the most amazing point, how we avoid procrastination. We now know the reason. Now let's eliminate that. Say, if our brain refuses the plan you really think you've got to achieve, our brain says "Oh, don't do that, that is useless, waste of time, I know trust me". Brain is not telling lies, but truth based on your whole experiences and unconscious. And here is a hack. By knowing someone who has succeeded with your plan, and how they achieved and what process they took, our brain would think that can be possible because each human is mostly has same capability.

This strategy is really useful. But one thing I noticed is that we can't apply this to challenging something new because there is nobody have done this before. In that case, you've got to have courage, and logics, calmness, willingness, passion to dive in that.
And one more hack is that it is also nice to here what our brain says, because it is good warning system. Therefore, you've got to get along with our brain.

Would you rather work at a job that required you to work a lot, but paid you a lot, or a job that required you to work less, but paid you less?

Working is a main part of life and source of living. We make money so that the economy cycles and we can commerce. However, earning money is not the No1 reason to work for me. Passion to work in that field is the reason so that I would get a job that I love to. Life is full of failure and uncertainty that it is quite often that that kind of job is paid less. However, I would take this for some reasons.

I am now obsessed too much

Finally I am surrounded with apple products now, first from ipod nano, ipod touch(3rd &4th), and iPad, and now Macbook Air. My life these days won't work without them. I woke up and open Macbook Air to write a blog, hit an ipod touch app to see twitter, browse through articles, and keep track of the day(some thing like how much I devote myself to developing, etc), and use iPad to read deeply such as Hacker News, e-books(for online lecture, and other field of computer science), and manga. I can say that the time I spend with one of those gadget is longer than that of time without those. I live without them only when sleeping, eating, taking shower...
I was surprised to realize that my hand looks for iPod touch immediately after I wake up. And I now think this is a little dangerous. I recalled one article.
Why I returned my iPad
http://longtailworld.blogspot.com/2010/06/ipadwhy-i-returned-my-ipad-hbr.html

This is exactly the reason I am feeling uneasy. They are too good, too portable. I had a long time I shouldn't have spent with those gadgets. It is not that time with those is better than that of without them. We need a time of boring. Having nothing to do, our brain starts to roam and find something. Using those gadget mainly for input. therefore, using those too much means endless constant input to brain. brain needs time to organize, reflect, and repeat. that is done when we sleep under unconscious, and boring time under conscious. both are needed.
I have to say this to myself. These products are not what you created, some people around the world who are really top-notch created, it is not honor just to used it well. The point is what you do with them, and that has to be your work. not imitating, and common. Be careful about this.

Macbook Air Coming now

I ordered new Macbook Air on July 23, at that time, I was in 2 minds whether I go to apple store directly buy or not, but eventually I noticed I missed out a wave of MBA, that I wanted the one that has US keyboard. And then I ordered it through online apple store. 11 inch, cpu is core i5, SSD storage is 128GB, and US keboard using student sale.
And after that, this has been a real hardship. I hate waiting actually. I know I just need to be the attitude of "So what?" and wait, but I just can't do that simple things. I checked the status of shipment over and over again. I went to board to see how other people go. Yes, I admit I am a little too sensitive.
But let me excuse, the product deserve it! When I touched at the store first hand, I felt that dramatically thin and fast and beauty of that. And furthermore, I wanted small size laptop to bring to anywhere to school mainly. And write blog article in the morning immediately, and take memo, programming in MacOS, etc.. The launch day was perfect actually, because the day was almost on the end of exam!! volia!!
Now, I am waiting for it in calm mood for the excitement of time using it.

PS: the transit branch warehouse is really close to my house, what the hell are they doing?!

Life after graduation

In the not so far future, I will be graduated from university. I am planning to go to graduate school, and now I am thinking about going overseas to study. However, this motivation comes from the benefit of living foreign country, not from benefit of learning specific field of computer science. And I know the motivation should be made of both. My motivation now only has former element. That is not enough, that will make my life there not efficient, aimless, language-learning oriented. If I have passion to learn something there, I have goal to achieve that will make my life there perfect. Now, I've got to think about major of my major. More concrete parts of Computer Science. Here are some topics that interest me.

1. Computer Architecture: I like this field, but I feel it has swollen well already meaning there may not enough space to develop further, this requires further examination

2. Software Engineering: I like programming, I feel so concentrated when programming, time goes faster. I know that a lot of possibility there, but at the same time, I feel its uncertainty, its less long life, if I get old, I would not be able to program anymore.

3. Computer Vision/Entertainment/AR: I feel this field is developing really fast and the world demands this. I know the bright future of this field intuitively. And this really fascinates me.

4. Machine learning, NLP :: This is the field that seems interesting. But I have not done this any part of this, that I really don't have any idea now.

OMG!! I really don't know. Computer is fun, that I can't decide which way to go.
We never know where the dot connect to, we just know it after it connected.
Be positive, and passionate. Stay foolish, stay hungry.

TOEFL Writing Practice

Do you think it's better to focus on one subject in college or study a variety of subjects in college?

I see a lot of successful people who are really good at one field. They look professional doing one thing thoroughly, and people start to think doing one thing is enough. However, I think learning only one subject won't lead you to success because of some characteristics of this world.

Firstly, in this world, things are connected each other in a complex way. You have to combine one thing with another to invent and develop products, and solve problems. Even if you have one really strong academic tool in the perspective of university, you are equals to someone who has only one thing in the society. Human being have experienced a lot of technologies using combination of more than one fields such as computers, television, and etc. More perspective and tools you have, more chances you can have.
Secondly, the world changes really quickly. There is no guarantee that what you got in university will always useful. Taking the world of computers for example, the history of computers is very short that our view toward using computer will change in the near future just like the history shows. Having more than one tools will help you survive in such a world.

Lastly, I think that's sad just pursuit one thing in this wonderful world. There are a lot of attractive and curious things. For me, I can't resist to learn them. You can't kill your curiosity just because your major is something definite. Learning something other than your major is always possible.

In conclusion, I think it is better to study a variety of subjects in college because of the world. In this world, we face a lot of changing problems and excitements. We can't survive living here with only one tool. Furthermore, you will enjoy your life if you hear your voice of curiosity and try to focus on something interests you.

One nature of learnining foreign language

I found one thing about learning foreign language. And this will alarm the trend going on in Japan that is learning English is something proud of, or that will brings you something valuable. There are so many people learning English for ambiguous things.
The assumption is that we all human have almost the same world of meaning. We have something to tell and mean in our mind. And language is about how well that can tell to the others. If you are fluent enough to tell what you have 100%, the language is supreme. This is true for native language of people. Maybe not 100%, but around 90% to 99% of course. And if you use foreign language you are not familiar, say you only know how to say "Hello", the rate the language can tell what you have in mind is almost 0%!! And learning foreign language can be seen as heighten the rate from 0 to certain amount. You can't heighten it over 100%. This is the point. Language is just a tool to tell what you have or get something that you can reach using language. Make no mistake that just learning English won't bring anything special. There are so many people speaking English just have born in English-speaking countries. We learn English just because it became the lingua franca, we just want to take advantage of using English.

Summer Vacation now starting

I passed 2 tests without exams, so that it is now summer vacation!! (earlier than my classmates lol) Now, I'll talk about the plan for this long holidays. I'll make great use of this to make a breakthrough, and leap in the level far above, and have some fun!! Here are some abstract plans.
1. Preparing for studying abroad
I'm really considering studying abroad so that I need to collect information as much as I can. Especially I have to have a good score of TOEFL. I think I'll have a TOEFL test until the end. And I aim to get a certain level of score.

2. Computer Science
Since I was too busy doing things done at school, I'll do a lot of my computer science that I couldn't proceed. I'm considering doing C++ course, and OpenCV that is a library of C++ that enables us to do computer vision, and I am also interested in natural language processing and machine learning so that I'll take online courses of Stanford.
I think good engineer do things that interest them really passionately. and luckily I have strong interest in those field. I'll do that!! What's good of this is that I can learn computer while learning English, this concurrency is really making it effective and efficient.
Also, if there is time and money, I'll challenge making iOS application. Now I'm considering buying Macbook Air.

Half-blodded Identity

Continuing from the previous post, I'll talk about what happened when I was elementary school student. All in all, I was not bullied due to my background, not like you expected, but the truth is I protected myself from bullying maybe. Meaning hiding the fact that I am half Taiwanese. And I really look like Japanese that it worked.
Here was what I felt. I thought I would be bullied if other classmates know me like that. That was always with me. As a little child, I was sensible about a slight difference. Actually, kids are really sensible to that kind of slight difference. Bullying mostly happens from that. Maybe I noticed that, that I was hiding it intentionally, for example, I didn't let my friends meet my mother, or I didn't want my mother come to school, actually she was busy that didn't come often.

The identity: half Japanese half Taiwanese

My mother is from Taiwan and I was born and grown in Japan all my life, no experience living outside Japan. Now, I'll think about how that background has affected my identity. This essay is composed of 5 parts, about myself, experiences in elementary school, junior high, high school, and now.
First, about myself. As I mentioned I am half Taiwanese half Japanese who was born and grown in Japan. I have grandparents and uncles and aunts and cousins in Taiwan, on the other hand, I have a few relatives in Japan. I often go to Taiwan to see my relatives, more than once a year.
Next, about how I look. Because Taiwan and Japan both are Asian countries that I think I really look like "Japanese" that I rarely was asked by someone questions like "Are you non-Japanese or something?", I had a few by someone who may be really sensible.
Next, about language. Since I was grown in Japan, I only speak Japanese originally. My mother speaks really fluent Japanese(I think people won't notice that she is Taiwanese) that when my parents grow me, the language was mostly Japanese.

to be continued...

Losing the purpose

I've been busy these days doing a lot of assignments. It is like a automated factory. When I thought I finished every assignments, I got new. I'm now like a machine. Doing same thing every week like a sheep. I am forced to move from this class to that class. and get assignments. So that the speed of time, I feel even faster. Same routine of work makes it faster.
And I realized that I've got to do other than that. about 20% of the day, I've got spend for what interest me. around April, I did this, because I wasn't that busy, in May, I tried to do this and did sometime, because it was getting harder, and now I even do not try. And I realized that Google's 20% rule is really nice principle. If you are too busy with the task, you will lose the purpose of the task, and in turn that will make your perspective narrower and fixed. Well, I spend 1 hour for learning English so that this is about 15%, that actually I did. but I've got to do other than English. about computer science not taught in school. Because people in English-speaking countries don't have to do English things. so that I've got to master English soon and get started to firstly catch up.

Limiting myself

I do really concentrate on my work in the morning and from afternoon to around 4 o'clock. But after that, I sometimes fail to keep doing my tasks. mainly after sunset. I think it is because my eyesight starts to become blur after that. I put contact lens on, so that it matters.
However, that is only an excuse. I can recover from that if I put them off and take a shower, but I don't do that and I sometimes take some time to relax to read manga or play videogame, etc. In that case, my passion toward the goal is challenged. I think there are a lot of people doing this much of effort, so that I have to limit myself to keep doing my work by following my passion to make me distinct from other people. And eventually, if that becomes my custom or ritual, the level of hard becomes higher, the standard becomes higher. I think top-notch people do this naturally. Yes, my standard has become higher than years ago if I reflect how I did in the past.

To limit myself, I've got to do 3 things.
・Just concentrate on the task after you sit on the desk.
Don't let something outside bother you, your passion is challenged that beat it.
・Set the time limit to each task
time limit should be little hard to achieve, that if you do more than maximum, you will finish it.
By doing this, your passion comes out.
・Think about people doing far better than you
You know there are so many top-notch people in the world, if you know their standard, you've got to catch up. In the similar way, think about people helped you, your parents, friends, etc. Imagine you become super person, and you surprise them.

Now, let's to this. Time is limited, top-notch people runs really fast. Don't hesitate and limit yourself, and limit you if you lose to temptation.

Where to put your standard

Yesterday, I talked with my friend who turned to me for advice about his life. He said that it was a mistake that he went to the faculty, because he doesn't feel motivated to be better at the field. On the other hand, he really put a lot of effort in dance, and his level is quite high. He is so much motivated dancing.
He said that there is no competitive and smart people around, because the faculty was not popular that people who choose the faculty as their not first choice, this in turn makes the class like the residual of people who lack willingness and competitiveness in the field. Due to that environment, he doesn't feel motivated like he was in high school. I pointed out that the standard is low so that this makes him feel well done in the field. This is why he lost passion. A year before, he was with motivated friends that he was also motivated, at this time the standard was high. Therefore, I suggested him to find new people who are outstanding. If that not possible, find from global perspective, such as facebook, watching online lecture from top-notch universities.
This story implicates that the standard is made by the environment where you are. And you misunderstand how well you do in the field. If you see the people from the global perspective, there are a lot of top-notch people in the world. Then naturally, the standard will become high because your passion and competitive feeling are challenged. I recall that when I watched online lecture from Stanford and Harvard, I saw the students there shining and that made me notice how far they are to a certain extent. So that my standard has become higher even if I do well in the school. Also, I found that people in the highest level, they still are motivated, and becomes better and better, meaning if you are in the A class, you will in the great circle of motivation. This explains why smart people becomes smarter.
The talk made me also realize that I've got to find more shining people from all over the world. A class people tend to work with people from A class to compete and stimulate each other, B class people tend to work with people from C class to make them think that they are good. Where am I? Am I working with A class people? Not enough, I will find more.

Try do it, if fail, that's no problem

When I woke up in the morning, I suddenly thought that I really have to prepare for the study abroad after the graduation from university. I was first planning the use of summer vacation, and I was unsure about how to make it meaningful, but I got a hint that time. I will research about the experienced people's life on summer vacation later, and I think I will put best effort to prepare.
Things like TOEFL, GRE are the criteria for that, and that takes so much time to make them ready, so that I think I will do those thing this summer and make my situation ready to go study abroad. In that situation, I can decide whether go or not or which school to go with relaxed mood.
I do have a lot of things to do except for the preparation, but I have to do both, no excuse, I just do it. I will put 20% of time I spend for my main work from now, so that I will use it for the preparation. And in the summer, I will be serious, do everything. This summer is the last good chance for that.
This is for my mental health, if I fail to achieve my goal, that's not a big problem. I will just have a way to study at Japanese graduate school which is also good. But basically, no excuse.

Do you agree or disagree? "It is more enjoyable to see a performance live (in person) than it is to watch it on television."

Some people say that seeing a performance live is much more exciting than to watch it on television. I agree with this idea for 2 perspectives. You can feel the quality sound and you may be able to have new friends who have the same hobby. However, it is so much enjoyable to watch it on television for me despite those advantages because it has 3 advantages better than that.
First, you can enjoy a performance in a relaxed atmosphere. It is the best to be home for me, I feel very comfortable there. Especially, I like watching a performance as I sit on a couch. You can go to the bathroom if you want to immediately by just stop the video. You can't enjoy this kind of mood if you go to somewhere to see a live performance. You sometimes see it standing, you have to stand in line to go to a toilet, and you may have to move to the site taking time, and you will definitely feel tired going back home after whole excitement. If you stay at home, you can watch the same content while relaxing and you don't have to care about moving around.

Second, you are free to have some food and drinks staying your home. You also have a table so that you can be more relaxed. You can eat as much as you want, and what you like to eat. It is very nice to have some snack as you watch a performance. If you went to see it live, you have to purchase them. And sometimes food and drinks are sold with expensive price. Also you can't eat and drink as much as you want. By staying at home, you can enjoy a performance while eating and drinking. This will make it so much enjoyable.

Finally, you can invite your friends. It will be very fun to watch a performance with them sharing the excitement. You can talk as you watch it. If you went see it live, even if you were with your friends, you will have difficulty talking because of the noisy environment. And you only have to focus on the performance. It is very fun being with friends, and this will also good because it can deepen the relationship between you and your friends.

There are advantages to see a performance live. However, watching it has more than that. Better quality advantages make it better experience. Because you can watch it in a relaxed mood while eating and drinking what you like as much as you want, and you can make your connection stronger.

I've got a new friend

The first meeting was about a year ago, at the school festival. He was displaying his piece of work that was video game of fortune-telling, and he happened to be in the same faculty, and promised to meet again at school. We did meet briefly but since the classes are systematic that we didn't meet that often. and time went on, for almost half a year with spring vacation.
And we became the 3rd year student, and on the other day, that was when the whole students were separated into groups, and we happened to be in the same group, he talked to me, since the member of group take turn to consult with teaching assistant, we had a plenty of time, and talked.
He was a little similar to me, he put his standard not on a local, but on a global perspective. We talked about going American university, and about learning English, about what we like. I never had talked things like that before, I was really happy. The temperature is same.
This story implicates that how people meet is very uncertain. A lot of choices, environments, occasions, timings, all these mixed and created. But there is one thing that you have to have, willingness to become a friend, you have to also have a ability to find those chances. Find people who are shining, and be friend. This is how you broaden your connections and perspectives.

What Actually learn English

I have spent a large amount of time learning English. However, I recently think of these time as handicap to me because those lengthy time wasn't exist if I were born in a English speaking country or Japanese was a dominant language in the world. Of course, I don't mean to criticize the unfairness of this situation, but I just decided to learn English in the way I learn not only English language but also something as English speakers do. I'm fed up with getting stupid examples of conversations, but now I don't have any other options to learning how to speak while learning something useful. I found the ways for the other aspects of learning English already. About reading, I'm already capable of reading lengthy and academic article, and that will empower my knowledge while improving my reading skills. And about listening, I mainly watch or just listen audio that is interesting and knowledgeable, by doing that, I can improve my listening skills while improving my listening skill. Next, about writing skill, well this is not complete way, but I write about anything including this blog. By writing a lot and lot, I can improve my writing skill in English while I impart what I have or organize my thought or take a note in English. This is incomplete because I don't have someone to revise my article or essay so that I am not completely sure mine is correct. But I think this concern will be gone after I keep doing this for a certain amount of time.
Next, this is the problem, I don't have a way of learning speaking skill. Of course if I just want to learn speaking English language, I have a lot of ways to practice, such as Skype, shadowing as I always do, go to conversation English and etc. But in terms of learning more than 2 things as English speakers do, it is difficult that I have not found it yet. The ideal way is that I was in the environment where there are English speakers around me, and they learn Computer science as well!! And taking same courses! If that was possible, I could argue about the problems or talk about the future of CS, and something I do with my friends now, But this is now impossible, Japanese Universities failed to collect students as much countries as possible. We only have Japanese almost unlike the best universities like MIT or Harvard. I feel a little pity for that, but I will change this situation by going abroad. But for doing that, I have to again learn English for only English language again, TOEFL. But this is necessary anyway.
Good university like MIT should have a variety of people from all over the world, and have a liberal and fun environment that people of different majors can get together and accept any ideas that now seems impossible or not practical.

The effect of problem solving method using brain-storming

The other day, I watched series of lectures of Stanford, Tina Seelig's crash course of nurturing entrepreneur. And I watched the first 2 lectures. Here is what those lectures gave me and what I felt.
The first lecture was about brain storming. There are some rules doing that. Which topic to choose. The topic should be appropriate size. But set difficult one that requires a lot of ideas. For example, come up with 500 menus of ice cream in 30 minutes, even if you won't make it, but you got 250 menus that is lot enough. Next, Where to have a brain storming. The room should have shared idea board such as white board, and the room should be spacious enough that participants can freely move and write any idea. Next, who to invite. The number of people should be 4 to 7 people, the manageable size. And people all should have a wide range of perspective. Next, how to do that. The brain storming should go with people all standing, all have a equal right to speak out and write down their ideas so that everyone should have a pen, also they are free to write down on memo what you come up when it is not possible to speak out because others are speaking. Also, participants should accept any ideas coming from people, any curious and crazy, not-practical ideas should be welcome. Also, you shouldn't use "Yes, but-" speaking, but should use "Yes, and-" to expand the topic. Basically one idea becomes very nice idea in the process of expanding by using "Yes, and-" method. Repetitive expanding sometimes makes a jump that makes it wonderful idea. And to manage ideas that have come up so far, on white board, the problem or topic should be centered, so that it will be much easier to see the whole picture.
These are how to do brain storming in detail. But this is a just one part of the process of production actually. The second lecture gave me a method of how to implement this method and how to define problem, and the attitude of creating prototype.
First, we have to define the problem. We can find a lot of problems of anything, in the lecture, students were asked to find problems of the classroom as much as they can in 10 minutes, and found out that it is not that hard to find if you are willing to do that. And those problems are chances, for business or yourself. By improving the object by removing those problems, that will become chances of business. Now you've got so many problems, and by interviewing with people about what they hate about the object, you can define one problem that seems the root of a lot of problems. This process will convert a lot of problems into a small but most effective point to solve. In the lecture, students were asked to do this process about the problem of name card. And each person defined the problem. And started to think about how to satisfy him/her by creating a better name card.
Next, now you have defined the problem, and now it is time to do brain storming that we learned in the 1st lecture, but this time alone. By doing brain storming, you can see the problem from a variety of perspectives, and find a lot of elements. Also, the question like "Why do you do this" will help. This Why question will expand the problem into a larger size. For example, if you want to make a bridge, you ask "why do I do this?", and find out that you want to go over a stream, and find out you don't necessarily make a bridge, but you can swim or use a ship. And also by asking one more why question, "why do you want to go over a stream" and you will find that you want to go to school over there, and you will see a lot of other solutions. Now you've got a lot of ideas of solving the problem, now it is time to make a prototype. The prototype should not be realistic and practical, you can use a technology that still not discovered. you just create it in a short period of time with a cheap materials, so that you don't have a passion to the prototype that will make it much easier to adopt feedback later. One problem of companies is that trying to make a perfect prototype, that pride comes up and it will be difficult to make it better. Once you make the prototype, show it to the people, people having the problem, and take the feedback into account. And you can redefine the problem and to the same process.
I thought it is so exciting that in a short period of time, we can create prototype. And I find the circle of the process very useful for any objects and things. I think the most important part is to define the problem, by watching around me, I see a lot of problems which are the chances. Having problems is the start of the improvement which connects to business.

What are the qualities of a good boss at a job?

A good boss should have some qualities from perspective of company. Because company as a whole, a boss should act as the company progress in the way the company pursuit. Therefore, I'll talk about good company's criteria first, and then criteria of a good boss.
First, my ideal company should uphold an innovation. The company has to pursuit something no one have done so far, and bear the responsibility that it will pull the industry, or entertain the whole world. And that innovation requires a lot of curiosity and jump of ideas, and solid technology, and therefore, passionate employees. The good company should maximize its employee's ability by implementing liberal and fun environment, and eliminate any obstacles they may have, such as fixed start time.
A good boss has to inherit these good company's spirit, and tell it to his/her subordinates. Therefore, a good boss has to also maximize his/her subordinates in a more specific way because most employees would work a lot of time with their boss. For example, the boss should not create hierarchy between him/herself and employees. That will just prevent active and creative discussion and works happening. In Japan, we have to use honorific to boss, and I think that limit the progress because usually boss and subordinates can't argue freely.
Also, I think a good boss should be smart as well. If the boss is not that smart, I won't follow him/her because that will not be beneficial to the whole company.
In conclusion, company should first has a good spirit, and a good boss should succeed that, and tell it in a concrete way. That is the criteria of a good boss and I believe that will maximize the efficiency and effect of the company.

Conversational English

I had been studying English using mostly CNN articles and audio since my entrance to the university was promised, that was around December, and other classmates had still entrance exam, I of course, couldn't showoff that I've done. I had so much free time, I went to driving school and also I started crash course of English. The method I used was basically effective. However, there was some drawbacks in retrospect.
The method is "Shadowing" which learners follow the audio without looking script, just use your ears and mouth. This is really hard for beginner, but once you get used to, you'll find it is really effective. Being able to shadow means you can listen and understand the script at that rate of speed, and also your mouth is able to move at that speed. Notice that it doesn't mean you can speak. But in order to speak a lot, you first have to make your mouth available to the native speed. After that, you can have a lot of practice to say something you want to tell.
But, I recently noticed that using CNN was a little not practical to me. Because the content is one-sided, only anchor is speaking, it is a speech and not conversation. In practical point of view, what I have to get is mostly conversational English, of course I also speech English, but I think this element will be naturally followed after getting conversational English. Not the other way around. Therefore, I recently started using script that is conversation, so that I can learn how to ask and response, and also some casual spoken expressions. And I also found that it is so much easier to memorize the script using these materials. This is because of the nature of human, interactive story is easily seep into the memory, because that is a key of survival of human.

I've got a new toy!!

The other day, I had an experiment using open source library called openCV. That can be used to realtime image processing. For example, filter and anaglyph and augmented reality. I did these in the class and I found it really fun, I now also do at home. I want to do computer learning and detection of human rather than 3D technology.

People with different temperature

These days, I got a sense that we should avoid let the people with different temperature in a bad way bother me. In Japan, for example, if you have some good idea, but it is curious to people, you have to avoid those interference. You have to go through intricate red tape, and people might say that "Don't do that stupid", those people hate to change. They are comfortable being in the stable place. But what would the people with different temperature in a good way? Those people would ask what it is your idea, and encourage that, and even if that idea fails, those people would say "Nice Try!" while the other side of people say "I said so, don't do stupid again".
Those people with low temperature of course can exist, but I don't want them to bother people who really want to make some innovation occur. We have a lot of talented people in Japan, but Japan as a whole bother them sometimes. It's is a loss of resource and talent for the world.
It is a big difference that you have a variety of and number of friends and you have a lot of friends but those contain people who always deny what you say, low spirits, like stability. I think we should sometimes select friends as needed. Friends that bother your dream, idea, thought, those who have a minus effect on you should be excluded. Let your objective go, remove the obstacles, if you simply can not go over those, it is just your dream&idea is something like that. In that case, strengthen what you have or discard that and find something new. We have to keep looking people shining, and become friends with them. Those people have a plus effect for you.
Don't settle, Keep Looking.

I am responsible for my sister

My sister is a fresh at University from this April, and has a lot of classes and of course assignments. Those are almost English assignments, but she is not good at English that she is now really busy just doing them. And sometimes she has to stay up late, and I have to help her as a big brother. Those are really easy to me of course, so I do them in a very short time. But I realized that recently that kind my assistance continued too much, I helped on every single assignments, she does not do them on her own. And I do them quickly, maybe she is using me.
I am like function(). if she call me as a function with a assignment as a argument, then I return finished assignment. It is like this, Finished_Assignment Yusuke(UnFinished_assignment);
In the computer science, that is called information hiding, users don't have to care what's going on inside function, users just know how to use it. But it is ENGLISH!!!! She's got to be able to use it fluently. I think she can't do them because her base of English is not accomplished yet that should have done by she finished high-school, the reality is harsh. In my experience, I first had a strong ground in grammar and vocabulary, and then I did Listening very hard, after these, I realized that I can write and speak to a certain extent, so now I have to sharpen these by practicing writing a lot and speaking out. I can help my sister, but I don't know whether I am bothering her from improving, does she have to do them by her own or not? I know at least that I am responsible for her. Part of her life is up to me. I think I will help her if she finishes by her own. I will revise and edit.

TOEFL Writing Practice:Do you like to eat out or eat at home?

Do you like to eat out or eat at home?

I prefer to eat at home basically. There are mainly 3 reasons that eating at home is better than eating out.
First, it's less expensive to eat at home. If you go to restaurant for example, you have to pay not only for the food's ingredients but also for the chef cooking and services. Also you may have to give some tips. And restaurants with beautiful decoration, say if you eat out for date, you have to much more expensive cost. But if you eat at home, you or your family will cook, and wash the plates, you just cost ingredients. Therefore, it is way reasonable to eat at home, and I don't have that lots of money, and I like that way.
Second, my mother is best chef, everything she cooks is more delicious than the menus. Further more, those dishes are balanced, that I can keep healthy. She cook a variety of foods, and she really enjoys cooking.
Finally, it's so much more comfortable. Indeed, if you eat out, waiters will bring anything if you call, it is comfortable. But I like the way I do it by myself, you don't have to take care of someone. And you can watch TV as you eat, I like watching comedy when I eating and drinking.
For these reasons, I really like eating at home. It cost less, foods are delicious, it is comfortable.
Restaurants never beat your mom.

My mom

My mom was born in Taiwan, and grew in the family of 7, father run appliance store. At that time, that was only shop in the region, and everybody came to buy, and the business was quite successful. My mom therefore was very rich. I've heard some stories that showcase how rich she was.
When she was entering middle school, she was not that good student, the test score was not good, and her mother gave a fridge to the interviewer and she passed the test!! Corrupt admissions!!
And next story, she wanted to eat ice candy, but didn't have money, and she secretly took a bill out of parent's wallet, while they are so busy, she bought ice candy, but the seller was surprised that mom had too expensive bill to buy just a cheap ice candy!! and the seller take mom to her parents. And she was scolded.

What am I thinking?

Every morning, when I try to write, I always get trouble of having nothing to write. And in those case, I write about having nothing to write/talk. Here you see now. The problem is, I still don't know what kind of things to include. I have to set the overall topics.

My topics now includes, what I thought, diary, memory, TOEFL writing practice, review, etc. Everything is my topic. Writing a diary is quite easy and useless, and I try to write what I thought that seems valuable and persuasive, but it is quite difficult. But, now I think that is inevitable. Every genius people I see also don't have stories every morning. Even if they had, they repeat what they've already imparted or simple they have much more experience of life. It seems I don't have to care about that. If I have nothing particular, I will write about my diary, or memory. And I think I will also TOEFL writing practice regularly, since I am considering to study abroad and will take TOEFL test, but because of its cost which is 20000yen!!!!, I have to be well-prepared that it is very profitable to write those in my blog.

Next problem is that how much should I write? With time limited, I tend to write for about 20 minutes, before I go to school. And if the topic is difficult, I don't have enough time, and in turn the article becomes short. But, I think I should not stick to writing a article in the morning, I can write in the day and night, I can write one article separately, or series of stories for a few days. Since that became my ritual, I only did it in the morning, I will change this. I think writing skills improve as I write.

Should going to class at school be optional or required?

Whether going to class should be optional or required depends on situations. But basically, class participation should be required, but that should always depends on student's decision. Here are advantages and disadvantages of each sides.

Optional class participation makes students do something else, what we learn in classes are not always necessary or important. Sometimes, it becomes a key elements of success because students will do something that is not consist of what they learn in school, but consist of their major and something else. Also, when the class itself is useless, or teacher is not encouraging, or students can do it by their own, I think students can skip the class. With time is limited, and considering the diversity of people, it is not wise to force students to attend the classes.

Mandatory class participation can bring students to a certain level of ability. Not like I mentioned above, most of students are not mature to skip the classes, those students tend to skip not because they are capable, but they just want to have some fun outside. In that case, it is so much efficient to force students to come to the classes. Students will definitely appreciate this later in the future. But of course, this makes top-notch students boring, and limit their progress. That is a waste of time for them.

For these reasons, I suggest a mixed style of class participation. Classes should basically be required to go for most of students, but for some smart students, they are allowed to not to come to classes after they showed their ability to the teacher. Also, teachers don't have to give those an exam if it seems not necessary. I think this type of class boost student's competition, that will in turn boost their progress.

It's all about balance

Everything in this world, the important point is to balance. Shouldn't go too much, in the same way, too little is not good. I sometimes think of what I have done, and reflect that I should have done both, not one-sided.
For example, I've been a little bit busy recently learning Computer Science, and at the same time, I want to learn English and my own study of CS as well. With not little assignment, I have to do. I tend to do English, but I have to both. I also have to OWN CS. The routine work makes it much mature and sophisticated. With time limited, I have to split it into parts and assign them. And I also do some fun, reading news, books, videos, training. Isn't it my excuse to say I don't have enough time to do them all, but it is possible, see the time you waste, such as eating slowly, having a long bath-time. Otherwise, if you say you are busy, you mean you are incapable. right? I've got to do them all.

The difficulty of having presentation in English

Academic presentation requires directness, simpleness, persuasiveness. And it is very difficult for English learners to have sophisticated and well-prepared presentation. Academic presentation is mostly consists of 4 parts, introduction , methodology, findings, and implication. Introduction part has to show what your topic is about and tell the whole picture and has to attract attention. Methodology part should be not long, it just tell how you had research. Finding part is the body of the presentation, based on your research, tell what you found. Implication part finish your presentation making your findings meaningful to the world. It has to tell "So what?" things. Relate your findings to the real world.
Actually, I had 2 academic presentations, last year. The first one was held in front of my classmate, and the second one was held in front of more than 50 people including some professors both native and non-native English speakers. The first one was painful, because it was my first ever academic presentation in front of people fluent in English, while mine was poor. I got really nervous before the presentation. But I noticed that once I started, that had gone. Because I well prepared, prepared what to say, I just went through the way I made. No contingency occurred that I seemed well done. But this easy thinking will be challenged in the next presentation. Well, the first one was I think good start for me. The second presentation, I of course prepared well, but not prepared well for my script and power point, not like the first presentation, because I had so much things to do of Computer Science. But I felt easy because I had an experience of presentation, and I felt I had a progress of English, that I thought I can handle that. And on that day, the professor said, a lot of people come including critical and professional teachers. I got really nervous because of my not very well prepared presentation. I realized that I have to manage it somehow. Once I started, I remember the feeling that was awkward, it was like I am speaking but I am not thinking, my brain was stopped. I read the script, and I don't think my explanation went as I hoped. And finally, I had a questions from audience. And at that time, my English was challenged, since I was so nervous, brain not working properly, I COULDN'T ANSWER.... Presentation is not like completely what you prepare beforehand, it is something that your whole English ability is challenged. I felt my English is not good, that I decided to do more harder. After the presentation, I got cold, really bad cold. That showcase that how touch the presentation was for me, but I think it is not like that anymore. Because I had those last year, those are my strength, source of courage, my start. I am now in the different stage. I won't stop, let's move on. Stay hungry, Stay foolish.
